You can save almost any public TikTok without the watermark by copying its link, pasting it into DropTik and tapping Download. That's the whole trick. The rest of this guide covers the details that trip people up: where the file ends up on each device, why TikTok's own Save button isn't the same thing, and what to do when a video refuses to download.
TikTok's Save button vs. a downloader
TikTok has a built-in way to save videos. Tap the Share arrow on a video and you'll often see Save video. It works, but there are two catches.
First, the saved file has a watermark: the TikTok logo and the creator's username move around the frame for the whole video, and a short TikTok outro is added at the end. If you just want to rewatch it, that's fine. If you want to use the clip in an edit, show it on a TV, or keep a clean copy of your own post, it gets in the way.
Second, creators can switch downloads off. When they do, the Save video option simply isn't there.
A downloader like DropTik takes a different route. Instead of the copy TikTok makes when you tap Save, it fetches the clean version TikTok streams for playback. That version has no logo stamped on it. It works for almost any public video, and it also lets you save just the sound or the pictures from a photo slideshow.
| TikTok "Save video" | DropTik | |
|---|---|---|
| Watermark | Yes, logo and username | No |
| Sound only (MP3) | No | Yes |
| Slideshow photos as images | No, saved as a video | Yes, one by one or as ZIP |
| Needs the TikTok app | Yes | No, works in any browser |
Step 1: Copy the video link
In the TikTok app, open the video you want and tap the Share arrow on the right side. In the row of options, tap Copy link. The link is now on your clipboard.
On a computer, open the video on tiktok.com and copy the address from the browser bar. It will look something like https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/7300000000000000000. Links copied from the app are often shorter, like https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM.../. Both kinds work.
Make sure you copy the link of the video itself. A link to someone's profile, a hashtag page or a sound page doesn't point to a single video, so there's nothing to download from it.
Step 2: Paste it into DropTik
Open droptik.app in Safari, Chrome or any other browser. Tap the Paste button inside the box, or long-press the box and choose Paste. On a computer, click the box and press Ctrl+V (Windows) or Cmd+V (Mac).
Then tap Download. DropTik checks the post and, usually within a few seconds, shows you what you can save from it.
Step 3: Pick the file you want
The results depend on the post:
- Normal videos show one or more video options. If TikTok has an HD version, it's listed separately, usually with the higher resolution. Pick HD for the sharpest picture, or the standard version if you want a smaller file.
- The sound is listed as an MP3 option. That's the one to pick if you only want the music or the voice.
- Photo slideshows show each picture as its own card, with a button to download them all as a ZIP.
Tap Download next to the one you want (for the sound, the button says Download MP3 audio). If a row says Prepare video, tap it first and wait a moment while DropTik gets that file ready, then tap the download button that appears.
If you're only after the audio, the TikTok to MP3 tool skips straight to it. For slideshows, the photo downloader explains the ZIP option in more detail.
Where the downloaded video goes
On Android
Chrome and most Android browsers save the video to your Downloads folder. Open the Files app (or Files by Google) and look under Downloads. Gallery apps usually pick up new videos within a minute, so it may already be in your gallery too. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands are covered in the Android guide.
On iPhone and iPad
This is where most people get confused. Safari doesn't put downloads in Photos; it puts them in the Files app.
- When the download finishes, tap the blue download arrow in Safari's address bar, or open the Files app.
- Go to Downloads (it may be under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive).
- Tap the video to open it.
- Tap the Share button and choose Save Video.
Now it's in your Photos library like any other video. You only need to do this once per file. Our iPhone guide covers changing Safari's download folder and other iPhone-specific fixes.
On Windows and Mac
The video goes to your usual Downloads folder. Files from DropTik start with droptik.app in the name, which makes them easy to find. Double-click to play.
Which DropTik tool to use
Every DropTik page accepts the same TikTok links, but each one is set up for a different job:
| What you want | Best tool |
|---|---|
| A video without the watermark | TikTok downloader |
| To compare HD and standard quality | TikTok to MP4 |
| Just the song or voice | TikTok to MP3 |
| The pictures from a slideshow | Photo downloader |
| A Story before it expires | Story downloader |
| Up to five TikToks at once | Bulk downloader |
If you're not sure, start with the main downloader. It shows every option a post has, so you can pick from there.
Downloading on a computer
On a laptop or desktop, the process is even quicker because you don't need the app at all (our PC and Mac guide has more detail):
- Open the TikTok in your browser on tiktok.com.
- Click the address bar, copy the link (Ctrl+C on Windows, Cmd+C on Mac).
- Open DropTik in a new tab, click the box and paste (Ctrl+V or Cmd+V), then click Download.
- Click Download next to the file you want.
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all save to your Downloads folder by default. If your browser asks where to save, pick a folder you'll remember, like a "TikTok" folder in Videos. Some HD TikToks use the HEVC (H.265) codec. If Windows can't play one, install Microsoft's HEVC extension or open it in VLC.
Keeping your saved TikToks organised
Once you start saving TikToks, they pile up fast. A few habits help:
- Rename files as you go. Something like
pasta-recipe-@creator.mp4tells you what it is and who made it. That also makes crediting the creator easy if you ever ask to share it. - Use albums. On iPhone, add saved videos to a Photos album; on Android, Google Photos lets you do the same. One album for recipes, one for workouts, and so on.
- Clear out the Downloads folder. After moving videos into Photos or your gallery, delete the copies in Downloads so they don't take up space twice.
When a TikTok won't download
Most failures have a simple cause. Work through these in order:
- Check the link. Did you copy the video link, not a profile or sound link? Paste it into your browser's address bar and see if the video opens.
- Check that the video is public. Private accounts, friends-only videos and deleted videos can't be downloaded by DropTik or any other legitimate tool. If you need to log in to see it, it usually isn't public.
- Open the page in a real browser. If you tapped a link to DropTik inside Instagram, Facebook, Messenger or another app, you're in that app's built-in browser, and many of them block downloads. Use the menu (three dots or a compass icon) to open the page in Safari or Chrome.
- Wait a minute and try again. TikTok sometimes slows down requests for a short time. Tap Try again after a minute or so.
For the full list of causes, including why TikTok's own Save button sometimes disappears, see why you can't save a TikTok video. If a public video still won't work, send the link to us through the contact page and we'll take a look.
Why the downloaded video has no sound
If the video plays silently, TikTok has most likely muted it. This happens when a song in the video gets a copyright claim: TikTok removes the audio and shows a note saying the sound isn't available. A downloader can only save the sound TikTok is still serving, so the file will be silent too.
Check the video in the TikTok app. If it's silent there as well, there's no audio to recover. If it plays with sound in the app but not on your device, try another player such as VLC. More fixes are in why a downloaded TikTok has no sound.
Why the video looks blurry
A download can't be sharper than the original. If the creator uploaded a low-resolution or heavily compressed clip, that's what you'll get. Also check whether you picked the standard version when an HD one was available. And remember that apps like WhatsApp and Messenger compress videos when you send them, so a clip can look worse on your friend's phone than on yours. See why downloaded TikToks look blurry for ways around that.
What a downloader can't do
It helps to know the limits up front, so you don't waste time:
- Private content stays private. Videos from private accounts, friends-only posts and anything that needs a login can't be downloaded (here's why).
- Deleted means gone. Once a creator deletes a video or a Story expires, there's no file left to save.
- No quality upgrades. A downloader saves what TikTok has. It can't turn a 540p upload into 1080p.
- No sound recovery. If TikTok muted a video, the downloaded file is silent too.
- No whole profiles. DropTik saves individual posts, not an entire account in one go.
If a site promises any of these, be careful. It's either not telling the truth or doing something it shouldn't.
Is it OK to download TikTok videos?
Saving a public video so you can watch it offline is a common personal use. Reposting it is a different matter. The video belongs to the person who made it, so:
- Don't upload someone else's video as your own.
- Don't use it in ads or anything commercial without permission.
- If you share it anywhere, ask first and credit the creator. Here's how to repost a TikTok with credit.
The exact rules depend on where you live, and this isn't legal advice. We go into more detail in is it legal to download TikTok videos? When in doubt, ask the creator.
