Why Can't I Save a TikTok Video? Every Reason and What to Do

Why Can't I Save a TikTok Video? Every Reason and What to Do

If you can't save a TikTok, it usually comes down to one of a handful of reasons: the creator turned off downloads, the account belongs to a younger user, the video is private, the app doesn't have permission to save to your phone, or the link isn't what you think it is. This guide goes through each one, starting with the problems inside the TikTok app and then the ones you might hit with a downloader like DropTik.

Part 1: Problems with TikTok's own Save button

The Save video option is missing

This is the most common one. Creators can turn off downloads for their videos in TikTok's privacy settings (usually under Settings and privacy, Privacy, Downloads; the exact names can change between app versions). When they do, the Save video option simply doesn't appear when you tap Share.

What you can do: the creator chose not to offer downloads, and that's worth respecting. If you really need the video, message them and ask. Either way, never repost it.

The account belongs to a younger user

TikTok switches off downloads for videos posted by younger users as a safety measure; when TikTok introduced the change, it applied to accounts under 16. Those accounts are also private by default.

What you can do: respect it. Don't save, share or repost videos from accounts that appear to belong to children or young teens, with any tool.

The video is private or friends-only

If a creator set a video so only their followers or friends can see it, or made their whole account private, you won't be able to save it outside the app. That's by design.

What you can do: nothing, and that's the right outcome. If it's a friend's video, ask them to send it to you directly. More on this in can you download private TikToks?

Saving starts but fails

If you tap Save video and get an error, or the progress bar stalls:

  • Check storage. Your phone needs free space for the video. On iPhone, look in Settings, General, iPhone Storage. On Android, Settings, Storage.
  • Check permissions. TikTok needs permission to save to your photos. On iPhone, go to Settings, TikTok, Photos (on iOS 18: Settings, Apps, TikTok, Photos) and allow access. On Android, check TikTok's permissions in Settings, Apps, TikTok, Permissions.
  • Check your connection. A weak signal can interrupt the save. Try again on Wi-Fi.
  • Update the app. An outdated version of TikTok can have bugs with saving.

You can save, but the video has a watermark

That's normal: when you save someone else's video through the app, TikTok adds its logo, and usually an end card. To get a clean copy, see our guide on getting rid of the TikTok watermark.

Part 2: Problems when using a downloader

Work through these checks:

  1. Is it a video link? A profile link, a sound page or a hashtag page doesn't point to one video. Go back to the video itself, tap Share, then Copy link.
  2. Does the video still exist? Paste the link into your browser's address bar. If TikTok says the video isn't available, it's been deleted or hidden.
  3. Is it public? If the page asks you to log in to view it, the video usually isn't public and can't be downloaded.
  4. Is it region-restricted? Some videos are restricted in certain countries, and these may not download.

Nothing happens when you tap Download

You're very likely in an in-app browser. If you opened DropTik from a link inside Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Zalo or TikTok, you're using that app's built-in browser, and many of them block file downloads without any warning.

Fix: tap the three dots or compass icon in the corner and choose Open in Safari or Open in Chrome, then try again. A strict ad blocker can cause the same thing; try turning it off for droptik.app.

The download worked, but you can't find the file

  • iPhone: downloads go to the Files app, not Photos. Open Files, go to Downloads, tap the video, then Share and Save Video. Full steps in our iPhone guide.
  • Android: look in the Download folder with Files by Google or your phone's file manager. See the Android guide.
  • Computer: check your Downloads folder. File names start with droptik.app.

The video has no sound

If TikTok muted the video because of a music copyright claim, there's no sound left to download. Check the video in the TikTok app: if it shows a notice that the sound isn't available, that's what happened. Our MP3 guide explains how to find another video that uses the same sound.

The video looks blurry

Pick the HD option if it was in the results. If not, the creator's upload is the limit; a downloader can't add detail that isn't there. See why downloaded TikToks look blurry.

It worked yesterday but not today

TikTok occasionally slows down requests for a while or changes how videos are delivered. Wait a minute and tap Try again. If a public video keeps failing for more than a few hours, let us know with the link and we'll check it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a video if the creator turned off downloads? Technically, a downloader can usually still save a public video. But the creator chose not to share the file, so the best move is to ask them, and never repost it.

Can any tool download private TikToks? No legitimate one can. Private videos require being logged in as someone the creator allowed, and downloaders don't (and shouldn't) do that.

Will the creator know if I download their video? Downloading through a website doesn't use your TikTok account, so it isn't linked to your profile.
