Downloaded TikTok Video Has No Sound? Here's Why and How to Fix It

If a TikTok you downloaded plays without sound, the most likely reason is that TikTok itself removed the audio, usually because of a music copyright claim. In that case there's no sound left to download, from DropTik or anywhere else. But silent videos have a few other causes too, and most of those are easy to fix. This guide helps you work out which one you're dealing with.

First, check the video in the TikTok app

This single check tells you which half of the problem you're in.

Open the same video in the TikTok app or on tiktok.com and play it with the volume up.

When TikTok muted the video

TikTok licenses music for use inside the app, and those licences have limits. When a rights holder claims a song, or a licence changes, TikTok may remove the audio from videos that use it. You'll typically see a message on the video saying the sound isn't available, and the video plays silently.

A downloader saves what TikTok is currently serving. If the audio has been removed on TikTok's side, the downloaded file is silent too. Nothing on your phone can bring it back.

What you can still do:

  1. Find another video with the same sound. Tap the sound name at the bottom of the video (if it's still shown) to open the sound page. Other videos using that sound may still play it.
  2. Save the audio from that other video. Paste its link into the TikTok to MP3 tool to keep just the sound.
  3. Look the song up. If it's a commercial track, it's probably on music streaming services in full and in better quality.
  4. Ask the creator. If you need the original video with its sound for a legitimate reason, the creator may still have their original file.

Our MP3 guide explains how to pick a video where the sound plays cleanly.

When the sound works in TikTok but not in your file

Check the volume and audio output

It sounds obvious, but it's the most common fix. Check that:

  • Media volume is turned up (on Android, press the volume button while the video plays, since ringer and media volume are separate).
  • Bluetooth headphones or a speaker aren't still connected and playing the sound somewhere else.
  • The speaker icon on the video player isn't crossed out.

Try another player

Most players handle TikTok downloads without trouble, but if one plays silently, try another:

  • Windows: VLC media player (free) plays practically everything.
  • Mac: QuickTime or VLC.
  • iPhone: open the file in the Files app preview, or save it to Photos and play it there.
  • Android: your gallery app, or VLC from the Play Store.

If the sound plays in VLC but not in your usual app, the issue is that app, not the file.

Check you downloaded a video, not photos

Photo slideshows are pictures plus a separate sound. If you saved the pictures, they won't have audio, because images can't carry sound. Save the slideshow's sound separately with Download MP3 audio, or, if the results include a video option, use Prepare video to get the slideshow as a video with its music. See our slideshow guide for details.

Download it again

Occasionally a download gets interrupted and the file ends up incomplete. If the file is unusually small for its length, or it stops early, go back to DropTik, paste the link again and download a fresh copy, ideally on a stable Wi-Fi connection.

The sound disappears after editing or sharing

If the file you downloaded has sound but the edited version or the copy someone received doesn't, the problem happened after the download:

  • Editors: some editing apps mute clips that use copyrighted music when you export, or the clip's volume was set to zero on the timeline. Check the clip's audio level.
  • Social apps: platforms like Instagram or YouTube may mute an upload if they detect copyrighted music. That's the platform's copyright system, not the download.

Can a downloader recover muted audio?

No. Be wary of any site or app that promises to restore sound to a muted TikTok. Once TikTok removes the audio, the original sound isn't available to the public anymore. A tool claiming otherwise is either mistaken or trying to get something from you, like an app install or your login.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the video have sound on TikTok but my friend's copy is silent? If you sent it through a messaging or social app, that app may have muted or re-processed it. Send the file again, or share the TikTok link instead.

Does the HD version have sound when the standard one doesn't? Both versions come from the same post, so if TikTok removed the audio, both are silent. If only one of them is silent, download that one again.

Can I add the sound back myself? If you have the audio from another video using the same sound, you can line it up in a video editor. For anything you post publicly, make sure you're allowed to use the music.

Will downloading the MP3 work if the video is muted? No. The MP3 is taken from the same audio, so if TikTok removed it, the MP3 is silent too. Use a different video that still plays the sound.
