On a computer you don't need the TikTok app or any software to save a video. Open the TikTok in your browser, copy the address, paste it into DropTik and click Download. The file lands in your Downloads folder without the watermark. It works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook.
This guide covers the keyboard shortcuts that make it quick, where the file goes on each system, and the one problem that catches Windows users out: HD TikToks that won't play.
Step 1: Copy the TikTok link on your computer
There are three easy ways to get the link:
- From tiktok.com: open the video in your browser. Click the address bar, press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C on Windows or Linux (Cmd+A, Cmd+C on Mac).
- From the Share menu: on tiktok.com, click the Share arrow on the video and choose Copy link.
- From your phone: if you found the video on your phone, copy the link there and send it to yourself, for example through a messaging app you also use on your computer, or by email.
Make sure the link is for a single video. It should look like https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/.... A profile link (https://www.tiktok.com/@username) won't work, because it doesn't point to one video.
Using the TikTok desktop app
If you watch TikTok in its Windows or Mac app rather than a browser, copying works the same way: click Share on the video and choose Copy link. Then paste it into DropTik in your browser. The desktop app doesn't need to stay open while you download.
Step 2: Paste it into DropTik
- Open droptik.app in a new tab (Ctrl+T or Cmd+T).
- Click inside the box and press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V). You can also click the Paste button; your browser may ask once for permission to read the clipboard.
- Click Download.
After a few seconds you'll see the download options for that post.
Step 3: Pick a file and save it
Choose what you need:
- HD video if it's listed, for the best picture on a big screen.
- Standard video for a smaller file.
- MP3 if you just want the audio; the TikTok to MP3 page goes straight to it.
Click Download next to your choice. If a row says Prepare video, click it first, wait for it to finish, then click the download button that appears.
Where the file goes
Windows: open File Explorer and click Downloads in the left panel. You can also press Ctrl+J in Chrome or Edge to open the browser's downloads list, then click Show in folder (Chrome) or the folder icon (Edge).
Mac: open Finder and click Downloads in the sidebar, or click the downloads arrow in Safari's toolbar. In Chrome on Mac, Cmd+Shift+J opens the downloads list.
Chromebook: open the Files app and go to Downloads.
DropTik file names start with droptik.app, so typing "droptik" into the search box of File Explorer or Finder finds them quickly.
Tip: if you save TikToks often, make a dedicated folder like Videos/TikTok and set your browser to ask where to save each file. In Chrome, that's Settings, Downloads, Ask where to save each file before downloading. In Safari on Mac, it's Settings, General, File download location.
If the HD video won't play on Windows
Some HD TikToks are encoded with HEVC (also called H.265), a newer video format that keeps quality high at smaller file sizes. Macs, iPhones and most Android phones play it without trouble. Windows sometimes doesn't, and you'll see an error, a black screen, or sound with no picture in the Photos or Media Player app.
You have three easy fixes:
- Install the HEVC extension. Microsoft offers HEVC Video Extensions in the Microsoft Store (a small paid add-on in most regions). Once installed, the built-in apps can play these files. Some PCs already have it.
- Use VLC. The free VLC media player plays HEVC out of the box, along with almost every other format.
- Download the standard version instead. If both options are listed, the standard file is often in a more widely supported format.
If you're going to edit the video, most current editors, including DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro and CapCut for desktop, can import HEVC files.
Saving several TikToks on a computer
A computer makes it easy to collect links. Open each TikTok in its own tab, copy the addresses into a note, then paste up to five at a time into the bulk downloader. If your browser asks whether droptik.app may download multiple files, click Allow. Our guide to downloading multiple TikToks has more tips.
Common problems on desktop
Clicking Download does nothing
A strict ad blocker or privacy extension may be blocking the download. Try turning it off for droptik.app, or open the page in a private window where extensions are usually disabled.
The video opens in a new tab instead of downloading
Some browsers play video files instead of saving them. Right-click the video and choose Save video as..., or go back and use the download button again.
DropTik shows an error
Check that the link opens a public video in your browser. Private and deleted videos can't be downloaded. Our article on why a TikTok won't save goes through every cause.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install a TikTok downloader program? No. A browser is all you need, which also means nothing extra running on your computer.
Does it work on Mac with Safari? Yes. Safari saves to your Downloads folder by default.
Can I download TikTok videos on a Chromebook? Yes. Use Chrome as on any other computer; files go to Files, Downloads.
Can I save a TikTok as a GIF on my computer? DropTik saves MP4 video, MP3 audio and images. To make a GIF, open the MP4 in a GIF tool or video editor and export it.
Does it work on Linux or in Firefox? DropTik is a regular web page, so it's built to work in current versions of Firefox, Brave, Opera and other modern browsers on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If something doesn't work in your browser, let us know through the contact page.
Is downloading on a computer faster than on a phone? Usually it's about the same; the speed depends mostly on your internet connection. A computer just makes it easier to collect and rename lots of files.
